Protecting yourself from virusesIn our experience we often see user and business machines totally unprotected from viruses, and others with the best anti-virus softwarepoorly updated, usually because the 'subscription' model of doing business by some software makers is inconvenient, costly and not ideally suited to the New Zealand market that still relies heavily on slow dial up connections for update downloads. The current worst case example is a user running the leading antivirus product, 18 months after his subscription had ended who had over 100 individual viruses infecting his machine, corrupting his data, slowing his computer, and hijacking his internet connection and email system.
We also sometimes see organisations that have corporate editions of anti-virus products installed on their main servers, but a haphazard implementation on user's desktops. Spyware - a new breed of threatAt ITEX we have seen time and time again, customers computers or servers which are performing poorly, and much slower than they used to be when they were new. Often we have been asked by these customers if they need to buy new, faster, more expensive equipment. In 95% of the cases, the answer is a resounding NO !
Unsuspecting Internet user's Internet browsing habits are often tracked, hidden applications often installed on top of innocent looking 'helper' applications and seemingly innocuous clicks of the mouse - or even the computer's operating system itself can leave open a backdoor to your system and data. A worst case example was a customer's Pentium 3 computer with 256MB RAM that ran so slowly he was thinking of giving it away and buying another. This computer was brought back to life after an ITEX warrant of fitness and tune-up, we cleared off over a dozen spyware applications (including some that the best anti-spyware utilities could not clear off). Sometimes the available anti-spyware products cannot clear the system entirely, and will require manual steps to rid the machine of the threat.
This particular customer was using a well known, respected Anti-Virus product, which unfortunately was out of date because the annual subscription fee was too expensive, the customer was also using one of the better known Anti-Spyware products!
